ATLANTA HISTORY CENTER

Children's Game App Design

OBJECTIVE

Founded in 1926, the Atlanta History Center is an all-inclusive 32 acre attraction featuring the Atlanta History Museum, two historic houses, the Centennial Olympic Games Museum, historic gardens, and much more. Its most popular exhibit is the Swan House: a beautiful historic mansion built in 1928 for the Inman family.
The Swan House
Our team (3 UX Designers) was presented with the task of creating an app that could further enhance patron experiences by exploring additional opportunities on mobile platforms for this attraction.

Upon client and user research, we found that there was a gap in engaging children at the Swan House. Although there was a desk where kids could "draw their dream home" and a kids' room where they could play with toys (pictured below), we saw that there was an opportunity to further engage this young audience.

CONCEPT

A simple scavenger hunt mobile app for young children (ages 6-12) visiting the historic Swan House. Players will be helping Sam Inman, the young boy who grew up in the Swan House, locate and 'collect' his favorite items by taking photos of them and curating a photo gallery for him.

CHARACTERS + STORYLINE

Through user research, we found that children's level of engagement is higher when there are relatable characters as well as an interesting storyline within games. We decided to hand-draw the main characters, Sam and Mimi Inman, in order to match the style of the game.

PARENT LOCK

Because the Swan House is a historic site, we wanted to ensure that children were not running around the house - especially up and down the stairs. We initially thought it would be a good idea to enforce a parent lock code before players could access the second floor. However, we decided to make this feature optional after receiving feedback from user testing.

SIMPLE LAYOUT

Because this game is designed for young children, the layout is very simple and clean. The spiral staircase serves as the reference point, making it easy to distinguish where each room is located. Each room has its own color and each item is clearly labelled.
